RVing is a great way to spend time with your family, but sometimes it can be difficult to keep your kids entertained without them being on their electronic devices the whole time.  Here are five activities to do with your kids while RVing beyond hiking and exploring the great outdoors.

Help them make their own pet rock. Rocks are typically plentiful on a campsite, so why not grab a bucket-full, some paint, and brushes to let your kids make their own pet rocks? Add kooky faces and voila! You have a new special pet – that won’t require feeding – for the day.

Fly paper airplanes. Make sure you pack scrap paper to create some paper airplanes. See which one goes the furthest, if any of them can do cool tricks, and whose has the most creative design.

Have a scavenger hunt. Send the kids out on a scavenger hunt to help them spend time outdoors. You can download a template from the internet or handwrite the list based on things around you.

Build a bird feeder. Birds are abundant at campsites, so consider creating a homemade bird feeder. You can take an orange, cut it in half, and take out the pulp. Then, put two dowel rods through it to provide little stands for the birds. Fill it with bird seed and hang it up with string, then sit back and watch for winged visitors!

Have a squirt gun competition. Use some empty solo cups to create a squirt gun competition that mirrors carnival games. See which kid can knock the most cups off the table from a distance or who can make the cup go the farthest.

Getting a new RV can be exciting, as it means you’re one step closer to heading out on your big adventure. Before you hit the open road, though, it’s important your new rig is ready. Here are a few tips for prepping your new RV that will make your first trip with it a success.

Get to know your RV. Whether you’re a first-time buyer or an RV veteran, it’s important to remember that not all rigs are the same. Take a day to set up your RV in the driveway and test out its various systems. Open the awning, cool the refrigerator, and use the air conditioning to make sure you know how everything works – and that everything is in working order.

Stock up on everything you need. Stocking an RV might not seem like a big deal, but you don’t want to wait until the last minute, especially with a new travel trailer. Adjust to your new RV’s layout and storage space, and use these amenities to fit your needs. If you’re not sure where to start, use one of these sample stocking checklists to get started.

Make necessary repairs. When you’re getting to know your RV, it’s important you fix any systems or stock that need repair. When it’s time to send our customers away with their perfect RV from RVs of West Texas, we like to give them a few tips for the road. Here are some of our favorite RV hacks that will make RV life all the better.

The Perfect Trash Can

  • Keep your RV neat by investing in a small, lidded trash can. Our favorite one is actually a cylindrical cereal container, the kind that have sealed lids with a small opening. You can use a plastic bag to line it, and with the tight-fitting lid you’ll never have to worry about spills.

Saving Water

  • When you’re camping in your RV, you should do your best to conserve water, especially if you’re in a place without a water hookup. We have two tricks to help with this. The first is to turn off the water when you’re lathering up in the shower. Only have it on when it’s necessary. The second is to wipe your dishes down with paper towels before washing them, which will make washing easier and allow you to use less water.

Smart Fire

  • Trying to set up camp but can’t get the fire going? Try using some tortilla chips as a fire starter. Once it’s ablaze, add a little sage on top to help keep the mosquitoes away.
